    Overview

MOTS-c, or mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c, is a 16-residue peptide originating from the mitochondrial genome. Discovered in 2015, it plays a significant role in cellular metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and mitochondrial function, with potential implications for managing diabetes, obesity, and age-related conditions. Research indicates that MOTS-c can enhance glucose uptake, improve insulin sensitivity, stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis, and decrease oxidative stress. Under conditions of metabolic stress, MOTS-c moves from the mitochondria to the nucleus, where it influences the expression of genes involved in energy regulation. This action involves the modulation of enzymes like activated protein kinase (AMPK) and 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR). Endogenous levels of MOTS-c tend to decline with age, suggesting its involvement in the aging process. Preclinical studies highlight its potential in addressing metabolic disorders such as postmenopausal insulin resistance and obesity. It has also shown promise in anti-aging by improving physical performance and reducing age-related declines. Furthermore, MOTS-c has demonstrated positive effects on cardiovascular function by preventing vascular calcification and enhancing muscle performance through its impact on mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism.

    Mechanism of Action

MOTS-c modulates metabolic function by translocating to the nucleus under metabolic stress and activating AMPK. It influences adaptive gene expression to regulate energy homeostasis.

    Benefits

    • Improved glucose utilization
    • Enhanced insulin sensitivity
    • Reduced oxidative stress
    • Potential for anti-aging effects
    • Improved cardiovascular health
    • Enhanced muscle performance

    Reported Side Effects

    • Injection site irritation
    • Injection site swelling
    • Injection site redness
    • Nodules at injection site
    • Pain or discomfort at injection site
    • Bruising at injection site
